Registering and Auto-provisioning Multiline IP Telephones without a DN

Overview

This procedure reduces and simplifies the provisioning and installation effort for IP Phones that you wish to register as a basic Userless Device—a device with service level "IP Device Only", allowing the user to log in but not requiring a license. This is particularly beneficial for Hot Desking deployments.

The following IP Phones can be registered as a Userless Device: 5005, 5010, 5020, 5140, 5205, 5207, 5212 (Dual Mode), 5215/5215e, 5220/5220e, 5224 (Dual Mode), 5240, 5304, 5312, 5324, 5320/5320e, 5330/5330e, 5340/5340e, 5360, 69xx IP Phones, Navigator, and SpectraLink NeLink.

NOTES

With this Automatic DN Selection registration and auto-provisioning method, a device can be registered and brought to service without being pre-configured first and the installer only needs to enter the Set Registration Access Code to initiate the registration. Entering the device's Directory Number is not necessary.

During the registration process, the system uses a circular hunt to search for a free DN within a Defined Range - unique for each MiVoice Business system within a cluster. If a Local-Only DN is found, the search continues. If the system finds ten consecutive Local-Only DNs, the registration attempt will be aborted

When a free DN is found, a device record is created and the device is brought into service. The following fields are auto-populated in the User and Services Configuration, User and Device Attributes, Station Attributes, Multiline IP Sets and other associated forms.

NOTE: After the device is registered, you can change these configuration values.

The device is configured on the local MiVoice Business system, which becomes the device's primary host. If a Secondary Element is selected in the System Options form, the device is also configured on the other MiVoice Business system, which becomes the device's secondary controller. In a cluster configuration, the SDS process also configures the device's remote directory number on all MiVoice Business systems in the cluster.

This Automatic DN Selection registration process can be used in various network configurations, but only for devices that will be hosted by the same (primary) node. If load-balancing across nodes is required, the existing PIN-registration method must be used (Device Registration Access Code followed by the DN or Remote DN).

Defining an Automatic DN Selection Range

The Automatic DN Selection range is defined by the following parameters in the Shared System Options  and System Options forms:

Use the following Maintenance commands to identify free DNs and to select the configuration values for the above parameters: LOCATE ALL FREE and LOCATE AUTO_DN.

The configured DN range is only known to the local node and not to any other MiVoice Business system. To avoid overlapping and the possibility that the same DN is auto selected for multiple devices, ensure that the specified range is unique for each MiVoice Business system within a cluster.

NOTES

Before You Begin

Programming

To register an IP device without a DN:

  1. Provision the Automatic DN Selection range:

NOTE: The DN range must be programmed before attempting to register a device without specifying a DN. Otherwise, the registration will fail and a lockout of the physical device may occur.

  1. Select the Set Registration Auto DN Selection - Secondary Element in the System Options form.

This field is optional, but recommended to ensure resiliency.

  1. To register the device, dial the Set Registration Access Code and press the designated hard key. See Register IP Telephones from the Station for details.
